ARAI

ARAI was initiated on 10th December 1966, with an intention to cater to the growing demand of automotive testing, certification and research. Starting with an humble beginning of four engineers and today with a total strength of +650 employees, ARAI has reached many milestones and has undoubtedly become a premier institute to reckon with, in last five decades.

ARAI Academy

ARAI has three strong verticals that it caters to: Testing & Certification, Research & Development and the Skill Development. The premier organisations like ARAI understands the necessity to support the nation's cause of skill development, especially in the area of automotive and allied domain.

ARAI Academy has 3 centres:
  • Learning Centre
  • Training Centre
  • Knowledge Centre

ARAI has embarked upon a programme of building human resources by commencing educational program in collaboration with VIT (Vellore Institute of Technology) University from 2004, wherein the MoU was signed between ARAI & VIT University on 10th May 2004 for M Tech in Automotive Engineering, where the students would study their first year at VIT Vellore and second year at ARAI Pune. Thus, the first batch arrived at ARAI in June 2005 for their second year. The purpose of the programme was to create a new breed of engineers with in-depth theoretical and deep practical knowledge to meet the needs of modern automotive industry.

The first 2 batches of 25 each completed the M. Tech program in June 2006 & 2007 respectively. In order to meet the industry demand, the batch size was increased to 50. Accordingly, the tenth batch of VIT M. Tech students passed out in June 2015.

Later on, ARAI signed MoU with College of Engineering Pune (CoEP) on 14th May 2010 for 2-year M Tech programme in Automotive Technology, where the students would study three days at CoEP and 2 days at ARAI in a week. Accordingly, the fifth batch M. Tech Automotive Technology from CoEP passed out in June 2016.

Similarly, ARAI signed MoU with VelTech University, Chennai on 7th October 2011 for 2-year M Tech Programme in IC Engines and Automotive Electronics & Embedded Systems. Thereafter, ARAI signed MoU with VelTech University for 2-year M Tech Programme in Automotive Materials & Manufacturing. Accordingly, fourth batch of above M. Tech programmes passed in June 2016.

A need was felt to start undergraduate programme (B Tech) in Automotive Engineering, and ARAI signed MoU with VIT University Vellore for 4-year B Tech programme in Automotive Engineering, where the students would study their first three years at VIT Vellore and the fourth year at ARAI Pune. Accordingly, the third batch of VIT B. Tech students passed out in June 2016.

Later on, ARAI signed MoU with Christ University Bengaluru on 28th April 2016 for 4-year B Tech programme in Automobile Engineering, where the students would study all the four years at Christ University, Bengaluru. ARAI has deputed one faculty as resident faculty at Christ University Bengaluru for coordinating the programme. ARAI faculty periodically visit Christ University to teach some of the subjects.

For all the above programmes, ARAI takes care of students placement and in the last semester, students undertake project, to be done at a location where the placement is done.

These students got placed in various companies like ARAI, Ashok Leyland, Bosch Chassis Systems, Cummins, Eaton, Eicher Tractors, Emitec, Escorts, Force Motors, GE Transport, General Motors, Greaves, Hindustan Motors, Hero Honda, ICAT, IFB, John Deere, Lombardini-Kohler, L&T, Mahindra & Mahindra, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd., Merc-Benz RDI, Piaggio, Pricol Technologies, Rane Engine Valves, Renault-Nissan Tech. Dev. Centre, Romax, Same-Deutz Fahr, Tata Motors, TCS, Tata Elxsi, TVS Motors, etc.

Cummins approached ARAI for upgrading the knowledge and degree of their engineers through M Tech programmes in collaboration with VIT University. The tripartite agreement was signed on 26th September 2012 for the following programmes:

  • M Tech in Automotive Engineering with specialisation in Engine Technology
  • M Tech in Powertrain Electronics
  • M Tech Manufacturing & Industrial Engineering

Considering the need for enhanced research in Automotive and allied industries, ARAI signed MoU with VIT University on 26th September 2012, for industry-sponsored Ph D programme, where the students would complete 4 credit course and conduct detailed research to submit the thesis to the Doctoral Committee. Today, around 15 industry engineers are doing their Ph D under this programme.

ARAI also has signed MoU with various universities abroad like Loughborough University (UK), Technical University Braucschweig (Germany), University of Alabama at Birmingham, USA and Tennessee Technology University, USA. Under these collaborations, we have Student Exchange Program, where Indian students go abroad and foreign students come to ARAI to complete their project work.

In line with Graduate, Post Graduate and Doctoral Programs conducted by various universities abroad, ARAI Academy has devised various Proficiency Improvement Programmes (PIPs), to be taught by ARAI, academia & industry experts. Based on the present system in universities, credits are proposed for each module, so that the graduate engineers can attend various modules and sum-up the credits required for Master’s or Doctoral Programs. Participants also get chance to visit related laboratories of ARAI and get hands on experience. Certificates are issued on the basis of written test conducted at the end of the programme. We also conduct training programmes through eLearning, WEBEX and Domain Training Programmes for automotive industry at their preferred sites. By now, more than 200 training programmes have been conducted so far.
